UV-C Light Safety

Abstract:

This webinar provides an overview of UV-C light technology and emphasizes the critical safety considerations associated with its use in HVAC and indoor air quality applications. It explains how UV-C radiation is used to inactivate bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by disrupting their genetic material, making it an effective disinfection tool. Presentation also introduces key UV-C measurement concepts, including wavelength, irradiance, and dosage, which influence system performance and effectiveness. In addition, it highlights the potential health hazards of UV-C exposure, such as skin burns and eye injuries, and outlines essential safety practices, including engineering controls, lockout procedures, warning signage, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). It also underscores the importance of proper training and adherence to safety protocols to ensure the safe implementation and maintenance of UV-C systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the principles of UV-C light disinfection and explain how UV-C radiation inactivates bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms in HVAC and indoor air quality applications.
  2. Define and interpret key UV-C performance metrics, including wavelength (nanometers), irradiance (microwatts/cm²), and dosage (millijoules/cm²), and explain their impact on disinfection effectiveness.
  3. Identify the health hazards associated with UV-C exposure, including potential skin and eye injuries, and recognize the signs and symptoms of overexposure.
  4. Apply appropriate UV-C safety practices by selecting engineering controls, lockout/tagout procedures, warning signage, and personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary to safely install, operate, and maintain UV-C systems.
