Difficult Designs: Systems That Make TAB a Challenge
Abstract: HVAC systems that appear straightforward in design documents and sequences of operation can present significant challenges during Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) when installed and operating in the field. This course examines several system configurations that frequently create difficulties for TAB professionals, including shared outside air ductwork, fresh air ducted to multiple small units, grille face dampers used as balancing devices, enclosed rooftop exhaust units, complex sequences of operation with moving targets, and simplified hydronic pump arrangements. Through real-world field examples, speaker will explore how these design approaches can affect airflow measurement, system stability, and the ability to properly test and balance HVAC systems. The course also highlights practical design considerations that can help reduce TAB challenges and support reliable system performance throughout the life of the building.

David E. Gilbert, TBE, is based in Frankfort, Indiana, and grew up in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. He earned an Associate Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology from Cincinnati Technical College in 1992, where he also worked as a technician in the Plant Engineering Department. During that time, he gained early experience measuring airflow with a capture hood while investigating temperature concerns throughout the building.
For the past 28 years, Gilbert has worked as a Test and Balance Technician with Fluid Dynamics, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned his TBE certification in 2003 and particularly enjoys analyzing complex system issues and developing effective solutions. Outside of work, his interests include traveling, hiking, camping, and writing and recording music.
