SUMMARY:Reverse Return Piping Gone Wrong
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis webinar presents a real-world case study of a hotel condenser water system that suffered from years of poor performance due to an error in the original piping design. During a Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) investigation, technicians discovered that the reverse-return piping system had effectively become a direct-return system because the supply and return lines were installed incorrectly. As a result, condenser water flow rates at individual heat pumps did not match design requirements, causing occupant discomfort and operational inefficiencies. Through flow measurements, system analysis, and review of mechanical drawings, the root cause was identified and corrected. The case highlights the importance of verifying actual field installation against design intent, performing comprehensive TAB procedures, and ensuring proper commissioning to detect and resolve design and installation errors before they impact building performance. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nExplain the operational principles of reverse-return piping systems and identify how incorrect installation can alter system hydraulics and impact flow distribution.\n\n\nAnalyze TAB (Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing) data to diagnose flow-related performance issues in condenser water systems and heat pump installations.\n\n\nEvaluate the relationship between design intent, construction installation, and system performance by comparing mechanical drawings with field conditions to identify installation errors.\n\n\nDescribe the role of commissioning and TAB procedures in quality assurance, including how verification of flow rates and system configuration can prevent long-term operational problems and occupant comfort issues.\n\nSponsored by: CxPlanner\n \nCxPlanner is the commissioning platform that helps Cx professionals move faster and make more progress with optimized flows and AI.\n \n
